The Philippines’s heritage city, Vigan, has raised a new remarkable artist in the person of young Marlon Ponsoy. A very remarkable artist, Marlon’s interest in art was developed at a very young age. Like other gifted lads, he would rather grab pen and paper and do sketches of what he observed around him. Unlike other kids of his age, Marlon at 10 started working as newspaper vendor in buses touring their province. He was a shoeshine boy on the side. Early exposure to hardship did not stop Marlon to pursue his dream of being an artist. After finishing high school, he moved to Manila and studied Fine Arts at the University of the East. His fondness for art continued and he participated in various art competitions, joined stage acts and the like. Natural talent in the young man stood out among the rest and recognized by his mentors. Marlon developed his talents and while studying in college, he worked as segment artist in a magazine talk show of RPN-9.He believed that time is precious and he never wasted it making sure that every minute of his life was productive. Compassion is in the heart of this artist and shared his talent by being an Art teacher at the Tulay ng Kabataan Foundation,a non-profit organization that takes care of the street children of Metro Manila. Marlon understood the predicament of those children for he too once lived with the people in the street. Hardship is always part of his life; he decided to work in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to find his luck. There, his passion for art never ended, He affiliated himself to Filipino Expat FESSCOR and staged his first one-man exhibit Entitled “Sulyap” at Riyadh embassy. After five years of being away from family and country, Marlon is back with his treasure of experiences. Through the years, he perfected his craft in painting, photography and sculpture. He mastered the abstract style using different media such as acrylic, oil, soft pastel, watercolour and mixed media. Photography is one of Ponsoy’s passions. Unusual things that ordinary people did not notice are captured by his lens. He is also fascinated with lights – bright and beautiful colours that make his spirit happy and lively.
